TGL Simulator Golf League Launch Postponed to 2025

An unfortunate Turn of Events...

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's highly anticipated TGL Simulator Golf League, originally scheduled for a January 2024 launch and to be broadcast on ESPN, has faced an unforeseen setback. The league's venue, situated on the campus of Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., encountered substantial damage last week following a power outage, prompting a one-year delay until 2025. Fortunately, no injuries were reported despite significant damage to the air-supported dome structure.

In an official statement released on Monday, the TGL league founders explained the decision, emphasizing the commitment to the safety of all involved parties. Discussions with key partners, including players, team ownership groups, PGA Tour leadership, and commercial partners, led to the conclusion that postponing the season until early 2025 was the most viable option.

The statement from TGL highlighted the incident, stating, "Overnight on Tuesday, Nov. 14, a failure of the temporary power system and backup systems used during construction caused the dome to deflate, which caused damage to the air-supported dome section of the site." Despite this setback, the league remains optimistic about the future of TGL and plans to use the extended timeline to enhance the overall delivery of the league experience.

Delayed by a Year

The TGL simulator league, designed to feature six teams of four PGA Tour players engaging in a three-player, two-hour team format, aims to create an immersive golfing experience. The air-supported dome, approximately 250,000 square feet in size, will house an oversized simulator with a 46-by-64-foot screen, providing players with an extensive area for hitting shots, greens, and bunkers. The venue is expected to accommodate 2,000 people.

Previously scheduled to kick off on Tuesday, Jan. 9, with weekly broadcasts on ESPN through late March, the league faced adjustments to its timeline. Players and organizers expressed a mix of disappointment and excitement about the unexpected delay.

Mixed Feelings

Rory McIlroy shared, “The postponement brings mixed feelings of disappointment and excitement. Above all, we are happy that no one was injured. We are looking forward to the launch of TGL. Given the circumstances, while the delay is disappointing, the postponement will allow us to regroup, refocus, and return stronger.”

Tiger Woods, a key figure in the league and a recent addition to the Jupiter Links TGL team, echoed McIlroy's sentiments. Woods stated, “I’ve been a believer in TGL, and as the momentum has built this past year, I’m even more excited about what this can become for fans of the game all around the world. Although the events of last week will force us to adjust our timelines, I’m fully confident that this concept will be brought to life by our great committed players.”
